Day 8 - The Spoilt Walruses
We were up early and out the door today very excited about our trip to Cassis, the beautiful village on the edge of the Mediterranean, a very ancient fishing port famous for its high cliffs known as the Calanques formed 120 million years ago. Winding down the road towards Cassis you can already hear the ooh’s and aah’s in the back of the van as glimpses of sun lit water are seen set amongst the most marvelous rock cliffs plunging deep in to the Mediterranean.
We arrive at the bustling Port, the hub of the little village with its marina filled with gorgeous coloured boats that provide yet another photo opportunity far too hard to resist. The sun glinting of the sparkling water makes you squint your eyes as you peer out across the sea taking in the unexpected stone beach with every body type imaginable, complete with a little nudity.
It is a hard job to describe just how marvelous this little village is and the absolute smorgasbord of beautiful sights to look at. First stop on our itinerary is to board our boat, an adventure in it’s own right, for our trip out to see five of the famous Calanques and wow what a trip that was. It had everything, superb views of ancient cliffs rising high out of the water and towering over the inlets they protect, turquoise and teal blue water so clear the fish feel like they are within reach to pluck from the water, white shimmering yachts anchored with their crew swimming beside them, blue skies filled with the white jet streams from the planes overhead and rock climbers!!
Tres magnifique is the only way to describe this magnificent oasis. A fantastic boat ride was had by all including our fellow guest somewhat afraid of being on the water however we convinced her that all would be well and life jacket acquired I think she almost enjoyed it the most, it was lovely to see and wouldn’t have been the same without her.
This superb and memorable experience was followed by you guessed it, yet another gourmet lunch served at The Grand Large Restaurant sitting right on the water’s edge where we are never at a loss for something or someone to look at whilst dining on the freshest and most divine meals coupled with a glass of Cassis’ finest rose and vin blanc, life just doesn’t get better than this. Such a relaxing and wonderful day was completed with a little retail therapy among the beautiful seaside boutiques before heading home to another Joelle Provencal special. And yes, once again the words ‘simply the best day so far’ were heard …. Bonne nuit, a domain.
